Bernard Schaeff was appointed to the Dayton Fire Department on November 17, 1935. He was promoted to Lieutenant on May 1, 1940 and on January 22, 1948 became a Captain. He received his promotion to District Chief on October 1, 1951.
He was assigned to Company 4 located at Main & Monument streets as the Central District Chief.
On July 12, 1954 at approximately 8:00am, District Chief Schaeff was responding to reported fire at a restaurant on S. Ludlow St. downtown. He was travelling south on Main St. Truck 2, also responding to the alarm was travelling west on Third St. They collided at Third and Main. Truck 2 careened off of 3 cars waiting at the traffic light and smashed into the corner jewelry store. Chief Schaeff's car went over the curb and struck a utility pole. He died on the scene.
He was 42 years old.
He is buried in Willowview Cemetery
