Clarence Dunkman, or "Bud" as he was called in the firehouse, was stationed at Co. 3 at Fifth and Wilkinson Streets. In addition to his firefighting duties, he was the company cook.
While fighting a fire at a factory/warehouse located at 101 Pine Street, Clarence was overcome by smoke and collapsed. He was treated by his fellow firefighters and members of Box 21 and then taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital where he died within thirty minutes of arriving at 3:30 p.m. of an apparent heart attack. He was 46 years old.
He is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
The building at 101 Pine St. is still standing and is home to WONE, WTUE, and WMMX radio stations.
