Crabtree was appointed to the Dayton Fire Department on May 3, 1929. He was promoted to Captain in August 1943. Captain Crabtree was assigned to Company 11 located on Brown Street at Park drive.
On September 7, 1946 at 7:55pm Captain Crabtree responded with his crew to a three - alarm fire at the Miller Auction Company located at 506 E. Third Street. While fighting the fire, Captain Crabtree was knocked off of a ladder placed at the rear of the building, by a stream of water and fell approximately 40 feet to the ground. He was removed to Miami Valley Hospital where he died just after midnight on September 8, 1946. He was 44 years old.
He is buried in Calvary Cemetery
