Appointed: March 7, 1894
Died: March 25, 1913
Badge #: 19
Badge Retired: October 8, 2011
Ed Doudna was stationed at Hose Company No. 9 at 234 River Street, which is now Riverview Terrace, between Salem Avenue and Dayton Street. On March 25th, the day the flood broke, Doudna was in a motorboat helping rescue people who were trapped in their homes when he approached the second floor window of a flimsy frame house at 918 W. Third Street at about 1:30 p.m.
While Doudna was helping a woman into the boat, she fell and landed hard in the rear of the boat. Doudna, who was standing, lost his balance and fell into the swift current. He came up and tried to grab the boat but his heavy coat and boots weighted him down. He disappeared under the water. An account of the attempted rescue that led to Doudna's death is recorded in Allan W. Eckert's book "Time of Terror." He was the only Dayton Firefighter to die in the flood.
Doudna's body was discovered four days later on March 29th at Germantown and Broadway Streets.
He is buried at Woodland Cemetery..
